EV Charger Installation in Whitby
Whitby splits at Highway 407: the lakeshore and downtown streets to the south, Brooklin and its farm hamlets to the north. Our electricians install home chargers on both sides, with the ESA permit and inspection looked after for you.
Brooklin Above the 407: Heritage Core, New Subdivisions
Brooklin sits north of Highway 407, which opened through Whitby in 2016, and it has been one of the town's fastest-growing districts since the 1990s. Its village core has its own heritage conservation district, while the edges keep filling with new streets, from West Brooklin near Ashburn Road and Highway 7 to townhome blocks off Baldwin Street. Those two halves of Brooklin call for very different installs.
In a newer Brooklin home, the questions are capacity and layout: how large the service is, and whether the panel shares a wall with the garage or sits in a far basement corner. If the garage will hold two EVs, two Tesla Wall Connector units can share one circuit through Tesla's Group Power Management, which can cost less than a second circuit from a distant panel. In an older village house, we look harder at the service size and at how the circuit can reach the parking spot.
Werden's Plan and Whitby's Older Downtown Houses
Downtown Whitby's Werden's Plan neighbourhood holds about 250 properties in a heritage conservation district approved in 2019, with the richest run of historic residential streetscapes downtown. The district plan governs what the street sees, not the wiring, so the panel inside one of these houses can be anything from long overdue to recently replaced. Before quoting, we check the main breaker size, whether there is room for a two-pole breaker, and how far the panel sits from the parking.
The district plan prefers driveways in side yards and garages set toward the rear of the lot, so a charger at the parking spot usually sits away from the front of the house anyway. If the service is short on room, a Smart EV Charger Setup can cap the charger's current to fit the panel's remaining capacity, and we price an Electrical Panel Upgrade only when the load calculation shows that cap would leave you short.
Ashburn, Myrtle and Rural North Whitby Installs
North of Brooklin, Whitby becomes farmland and hamlets, with Ashburn, Myrtle and Myrtle Station among them. Lots are bigger, garages are often detached, and a shop or barn may be where the car actually lives. When the charger ends up far from the house panel, the job becomes a buried feeder, a subpanel at the outbuilding, and conductors upsized so the voltage at the far end holds up.
Nearly all of Whitby, rural areas included, is served by Elexicon Energy, under what its licence still calls the Whitby Hydro rate zone from before the 2019 merger. The exception is a short list of addresses on the northern edge, along Townline Road West and at a few spots on Ashburn Road North, Dagmar Road and Lake Ridge Road, that Hydro One serves. Check the name on your bill; it tells you where to enrol in Ultra-Low Overnight pricing.

EV charging in Whitby
My house is in the Werden's Plan heritage district. Do I need special approval for a charger?+
On the electrical side, nothing changes: the ESA permit and inspection work as they would anywhere, and we arrange both. The heritage side depends on visibility. The Werden's Plan district plan requires a heritage permit from the Town for outdoor electrical equipment visible from the street, and exempts equipment installed away from public view. A charger inside the garage or on a wall the street cannot see avoids that step.
I'm buying a new townhome in West Brooklin. Should I ask the builder for anything before closing?+
Ask what the builder offers for EV readiness, such as a conduit linking the panel and the garage or a spare space in the panel, and get the answer in writing. Even an empty conduit shortens the job later. If nothing is offered, we install after closing and still look after the ESA permit and inspection. Forward the builder's reply and we will point out what it does and does not cover.
I drive from Brooklin to Toronto on the 407 most days. What charger size do I need?+
Probably a smaller one than you expect. What matters is how much energy the commute uses against how long the car sits at the Ultra-Low Overnight price, and eight overnight hours on a modest Level 2 circuit covers a Brooklin to Toronto return trip with room to spare. We match the circuit to the charging rate your car can accept and to the room left in your panel, then set the schedule.
