How Lakeview, central Oshawa and Kedron houses differ

South of the 401, Lakeview grew up between the harbour and the GM assembly plant. Its oldest houses are plain brick and frame homes from the early 1900s, and much of the rest is bungalows and townhomes added in the 1950s and 60s for plant workers. Expect a basement panel, parking that is often a narrow drive squeezed alongside the house, and an electrical service sized for that era's appliances rather than a car. The cable route and the load calculation are the first two things we look at.

In the central neighbourhoods around downtown, such as McLaughlin, Vanier and O'Neill, the job changes if the car is kept in a separate garage behind the house. The circuit has to leave the house, either buried in conduit or fastened along an exterior wall, and the length and route of that run is what sets the quote.

North of Conlin Road, the housing is newer and far more mixed. The Kedron plan area, stretching from Ritson Road to Townline Road, was laid out for detached homes, townhouses and apartments together, and Windfields keeps growing near the college and university campus. One Kedron subdivision alone plans more than 200 townhouses and close to 600 apartment units beside its detached homes, so not every new owner up here gets a private garage. Confirm what your parking spot and any condo rules allow before you pick a charger.

Oshawa Power, overnight pricing and your panel

Oshawa Power, the operating name of Oshawa PUC Networks, delivers electricity across the City of Oshawa, from the lakeshore up into the rural north end. Its residential customers can choose tiered, time-of-use or Ultra-Low Overnight pricing. On the ULO plan the cheapest block runs from 11 pm to 7 am every day, and the most expensive runs 4 pm to 9 pm on weekdays, which is exactly when most people pull into the driveway after work.

Set once during our Smart EV Charger Setup, the charger ignores that evening peak and starts drawing power at 11 pm, with no reminder needed from you. Whether ULO saves your household money depends on everything else you run during the weekday peak, so look at your hourly usage in Oshawa Power's customer portal, which supports Green Button data, before you switch.

On the panel side, the question is headroom. A Lakeview bungalow that already runs an electric range, dryer and central air may have little left for a 240-volt charger circuit, and we work that out on paper before you see a price. If the calculation shows that older service is already spoken for, an Electrical Panel Upgrade clears the way. Oshawa Power handles its side through an Upgrade Request form and advises against major spending before its connection approval arrives, so that request goes in first and the panel swap follows.

Oshawa rentals, student houses and downtown parking

Inside the City of Oshawa's Residential Rental Licensing Area around Durham College and Ontario Tech, rental houses need a residential rental licence. Licensed properties submit an electrical inspection form every four years, and again after electrical work or renovations. If you are adding a charger circuit to a licensed rental, plan for that update alongside our ESA permit and inspection, and keep the ESA paperwork with your licence file.

For a house shared by several tenants, a NEMA 14-50 Outlet can make more sense than a hardwired unit. Each driver brings a portable charger, and the circuit stays with the property when tenants change. Where the house has a basement apartment, the upstairs and downstairs units normally draw from a single electrical service, so our load calculation takes in the lower unit's kitchen and laundry too.

In 2022 Oshawa Power opened on-street Level 2 chargers at four downtown spots on Simcoe Street South, King Street East, King Street West and Bond Street West, which helps if you have no driveway. Once you have even a short private pad or a spot behind the house, a home circuit on overnight pricing is usually the cheaper and easier way to charge every night.
