Uxbridge subdivisions, from Quaker Village to Wooden Sticks

Around the older downtown, much of Uxbridge's housing arrived in a few clear waves. Quaker Village and Testa Heights filled in from the mid-1980s through the 1990s, Barton Farms and Coral Creek followed from the late 1990s into the 2000s, and the Wooden Sticks neighbourhood went up between 2003 and 2005. With an attached garage, the charger normally mounts on the garage wall and the cable just has to climb from the basement panel.

The panel is what varies street to street. A 1980s house may still carry its original service, and with central air, an electric dryer and a hot tub already on it, a charger at full output can push the total past what the service allows. Townhomes are the newest part of the mix. Winding Trail added 39 bungalow townhomes in 2022, and projects such as Wyldwood Trail and Countryside Pointe keep bringing more townhouse stock to town. In a townhome the panel and the parking spot are often only a wall apart, which keeps the run short and the install quick.

Elexicon or Hydro One: reading your Uxbridge bill

Two electricity distributors share Uxbridge. Elexicon Energy, which took over the old Veridian Connections territory, serves only the older core of town. Its licence traces that boundary property line by property line, past streets such as Brock Street West, Harvey Street, Barton Lane and Bell Street. Hydro One covers the remainder: a good number of in-town streets beyond that core, Leaskdale, Zephyr and every other hamlet, and nearly all of the rural concession roads. The company named on your latest bill tells you which side of that line your house sits on.

Which of the two you have matters mostly when the house needs a bigger service before the charger goes in, because the power cut and reconnection are scheduled with the company that owns your meter, and we make that booking for you. Rate plans work the same with either one. Ontario Energy Board rules require both distributors to let you pick Ultra-Low Overnight, standard time-of-use or tiered pricing, whichever suits the household. On the overnight plan the lowest rate opens at 11 p.m. and holds until 7 a.m.

Ultra-Low Overnight also carries a steep weekday on-peak price in the late afternoon and evening, so if your stove, dryer and air conditioner all run around suppertime, some of the overnight saving goes back out. Moraine acreage and hamlet properties around Uxbridge

Outside the town, most homes sit on acreage off concession roads, from farm properties around Leaskdale and Zephyr to estate lots near Coppins Corners and Goodwood in the south, including the gated Estates of Wyndance, and a fair number of those roads are still unpaved. When you park in a detached garage, a workshop or a barn instead of beside the house, the charger circuit has to cross open ground to reach it.

Between the house and that outbuilding the cable travels through buried conduit at code depth, and across a wide lawn or paddock we step up the wire gauge so voltage drop over that distance stays within what the charger needs. Sometimes the better design is a feeder to a small panel in the barn or shop, which leaves room for lights and a heater later. Digging adds hours, so we put the trench length and cable size in writing before you approve anything.

Two more rural details belong on the quote form. Many country properties draw water from a private well, and the pump is usually a 240-volt load that has to be counted in the panel math. If the charger will hang outside or in an unheated barn, pick one rated for cold, damp conditions.
