EV Charger Installation in Oakville
From 19th-century houses in Old Oakville to rear-lane townhomes north of Dundas Street, Oakville homes wire up very differently for an EV charger. We plan each install around your house, your panel and Oakville Hydro's overnight pricing.
Oakville's housing eras and where the charger goes
Oakville packs more than a century and a half of house building into one town. Its four heritage conservation districts, Old Oakville, First and Second Street, Trafalgar Road and Downtown, protect homes going back to the mid-1800s. Glen Abbey filled in from the 1980s with two-storey brick houses and double garages. North of Dundas Street, the New Communities are still being built out in phases over a planned 20-year span.
A century house in Old Oakville or along Trafalgar Road often has its service coming in through a basement wall and a garage standing apart near the rear lot line, so the circuit goes underground in conduit. If that service has not been enlarged in decades, a charger drawing power for hours may be the heaviest load it has ever carried. Where a Glen Abbey double garage is attached, the cable passes through the wall between garage and house, and we seal that opening so the wall keeps holding exhaust fumes out of your living space.
If your home is inside one of the heritage districts and the unit or its conduit would be visible from the street, ask Oakville's heritage planning staff whether anything needs approval before we mount it. Putting the charger inside the garage usually sidesteps the question entirely, and it keeps the cable out of the weather too.
Oakville Hydro, overnight pricing and panel headroom
Oakville Hydro is licensed by the Ontario Energy Board to distribute electricity across the Town of Oakville, so your charging simply shows up on that bill. On the Regulated Price Plan, an Oakville household can be billed three ways: tiered, time-of-use, or Ultra-Low Overnight. That last one sets its lowest price from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., a good match for a car parked from dinner through to the morning drive. In exchange, weekday power between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. costs well above the regular time-of-use peak, so compare a few recent bills before you switch.
Smart EV Charger Setup saves that 11 p.m. start on the charger or in the car's own settings, and before leaving we make sure you know where to check it on your phone. Panel headroom is the other half: a load calculation tallies what your existing service already carries, and the charger circuit is sized to what is genuinely spare.
When the calculation comes up short, there are two straight answers. Sometimes setting the charger to a lower output is enough, since the overnight window is long. Otherwise the house needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade, and since the utility controls the connection at your meter, we schedule Oakville Hydro's part alongside the ESA permit. The quote shows the panel work and the charger as separate lines, so you can see what each part costs you.
Rear-lane towns and new builds in North Oakville
The New Communities between Dundas Street and Highway 407, including Glenorchy and Joshua's Meadows, are where much of Oakville's new ground-level housing is going up, and a number of the townhouse plans put the garage at the back, facing a lane. In that layout the panel and the parking can end up at opposite ends of the unit, and because the side walls are shared, the cable has to travel inside your own space, usually along the basement ceiling before rising into the garage.
Newer units can also raise a paperwork question. If a condominium corporation governs your townhouse, the lane, the garage exterior or the parking pad may be common property, and Ontario's condo rules set out a formal written application for owners who want a charger. Check your declaration or ask your property manager before we book. A freehold town with its own garage needs only an ESA permit and the inspection that follows, both handled by us.
In a narrow rear garage, measure before you shop. We check the distance from the mounting wall to where your charge port stops once the car is in, because charger cables vary in length. Choosing a NEMA 14-50 Outlet means you can swap portable units later without new wiring, while a hard-wired Tesla Wall Connector makes sense once the household has settled on Tesla. The holster goes on the side wall, well clear of the overhead door track and the lane.

Our Old Oakville garage stands on its own behind the house. Can you get power out there?+
Usually, yes. Where the building already has a feed, we first check whether it can carry a charger, which can save digging. If it cannot, a new trench is needed, and mature trees, interlock and fences shape its route, so we look at the yard before pricing it. If the garage wall faces the street in a heritage district, we will flag it so you can check with the town first.
Our Glen Abbey house has a finished basement. Will you need to open the ceiling?+
Sometimes a little, rarely a lot. We look for existing paths first, such as a utility room, an unfinished storage area, a bulkhead or a joist bay that runs toward the garage. Where a small opening cannot be avoided, we tell you exactly where it will be before you approve the quote, so nothing is decided on install day without you.
Our Iroquois Ridge house already runs central air and a pool heater. Will a charger force a service upgrade?+
Not necessarily. The load calculation follows the electrical code's method, which assumes the big loads can overlap, so we count the air conditioner and an electric or heat pump pool heater at their full summer draw before adding the charger (a gas pool heater barely registers). A charger set to a moderate output often still fits. If the numbers fall short, we show you the calculation, so the case for an Electrical Panel Upgrade is on paper rather than a hunch.
