EV Charger Installation in Milton

Much of Milton was built after 2001, but the town still stretches from pre-1890s houses downtown to hamlets like Campbellville and Moffat. We fit each EV charger install to the home in front of us and to Milton Hydro's overnight hours.

Townhomes and semis in Milton's newer subdivisions

Milton grew from about 31,500 people in 2001 to nearly 133,000 by the 2021 census, and most of that growth went into planned subdivisions. Mattamy launched Hawthorne Village in 1999 inside the Town's Bristol Survey, where neighbourhoods such as Clarke filled in through the early 2000s, and the Boyne Survey neighbourhoods of Ford, Bowes and Walker have been building since about 2015. Detached houses, semis and townhouses all feature heavily in what went up.

In a single-bay garage on a Hawthorne Village or Boyne street, the constraint is wall space, not wiring. Whether your car's port is on the driver's side, the passenger side or the nose decides which wall is useful, and that same wall often already holds shelving, bins, bikes or a second fridge. Semis and towns leave even less to work with, so we plan the mounting spot around the steps into the house, the door opening and the point where your bumper actually stops.

Older Milton streets and the Campbellville countryside

Not all of Milton is new. Old Milton, around Main Street, has houses from before the 1890s, Fallingbrook dates from the 1960s, Dorset Park from the 1970s, and Bronte Meadows and Timberlea from the 1980s. In these areas we expect services that have been extended over the years, panels that may be close to full, and garages built for a smaller car. We run the numbers on the existing service to learn whether a charger slots in as the house stands or needs our Electrical Panel Upgrade service first.

West of the urban area, the former Nassagaweya Township brought Campbellville, Moffat and Brookville into Milton in 1974. Properties out there are larger, garages and workshops often stand apart from the house, and a cable route can cross lawns, gravel drives and fields. We bury conduit at the depth the code calls for and choose wire heavy enough that a long run still delivers the charger's full speed.

Milton Hydro bills and homes with a second suite

Milton Hydro, owned by the Town through Milton Hydro Holdings, serves about 44,000 homes and businesses in Milton, and a house with a second suite feels it on that bill. In 2024, council approved changes allowing additional residential units, such as basement apartments, in the town's urban areas. Where a suite shares the main meter, a tenant's cooking and laundry and your overnight charging all land on one account.

That shared service changes the load math too. A suite's stove, dryer and heating on the same panel leave less room for a car, so tell us if you rent out a lower unit or plan to, and we size the Level 2 Charger Installation around both households. A charger app that logs each session's energy also gives you a clean figure if you ever split the bill with a tenant.

Most Milton garages do not need the largest breaker the panel can take. A modest circuit left running overnight puts back much more range than an ordinary weekday of driving uses, and charging stays inside the lowest-priced hours of your Milton Hydro plan through Smart EV Charger Setup, or through the car's own scheduler if you pick a Tesla Wall Connector.

Questions, answered

EV charging in Milton

Our Dorset Park house dates from the 1970s, and the home inspector noted aluminum wiring. Does that affect a charger?+

Not directly. The charger gets a brand-new dedicated circuit from the panel, so the aluminum branch wiring feeding your outlets and lights plays no part in it. What we do look at is where those aluminum conductors land inside the panel, since wiring from that era is sensitive to how it was terminated. Loose or discoloured connections get pointed out with their own repair price, and the charger work goes ahead once the panel is sound.

We are buying a new home in the Boyne Survey. Should we ask the builder for a charger rough-in?+

It is worth asking, because running conduit or a dedicated circuit before the drywall goes up is far easier than retrofitting later. Ask what circuit size they would install, where it would end, and whether it appears on the panel directory. If the builder will not do it, we can wire it after closing as a normal retrofit, ESA permit and inspection included.

Our Campbellville house has a separate workshop with its own subpanel. Could the charger be fed from there?+

Possibly, and it can save digging a new trench. We check the size of the feeder running to the workshop, what the subpanel already powers, and whether the main service can carry the charger on top. If the feeder is too light, we compare upgrading it with a fresh run from the house. Whichever route wins, the ESA permit and inspection sit inside the fixed price we give you.
