Lakeshore cottages turned year-round homes in Georgina

Keswick was considered cottage country by Torontonians until the late 1980s, when major development opened it up. Along Lake Drive and Metro Road between Keswick and Jackson's Point, many original frame cottages have since been winterized, added onto or replaced outright, and the electrical systems carry that history. A seasonal building was never wired for a furnace, a heat pump and an EV all drawing power on a January night.

Lakefront lots add their own limits. All of Georgina is served by Hydro One, so the same utility rules apply in a Keswick subdivision and a farmhouse outside Pefferlaw. On Hydro One's Ultra-Low Overnight plan, the eight hours from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. are billed at the lowest price of the day, weekends included, and you can switch through your Hydro One online account. The trade-off is a higher price from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, which matters in a house that cooks or heats water with electricity at dinnertime.

The charger is what makes that plan practical. Set the start time to 11 p.m. and a Level 2 Charger Installation still has hours of slack before 7 a.m., even after a long highway day. Distance is the reason it matters here: Highway 404 now reaches the southern edge of Georgina near Ravenshoe Road, and if you drive to Markham or Toronto each weekday, the round trip can pass 100 km.

Simcoe Landing phases and Sutton by the Black River

Much of Keswick's newer housing is in Simcoe Landing, which is planned to span from Ravenshoe Road to Glenwoods Avenue and kept adding phases on former farm fields after the 404 extension. Where the garage is attached, as on many newer detached and townhouse models, a Tesla Wall Connector or a universal unit with a J1772 or NACS plug usually mounts on the garage wall close to the panel. The main breaker rating is still the first thing we read, since a new house is not automatically a big service.

Sutton is more of a mix. The downtown grew up beside the Black River from a mill settlement started in 1821, homes spread north in the mid-twentieth century, and a wave of houses went up to the east in the 1980s and early 1990s. The eastern streets, whose names run alphabetically from A to L, were wired for households of that era, not a car drawing power for hours overnight. Pefferlaw and Port Bolster lean rural, with bigger lots, detached outbuildings and longer runs from the house.
