Lakeshore, Kingsway and Rexdale: wiring Etobicoke's three eras
Etobicoke grew in layers. Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch were the first parts to urbanize, early in the twentieth century, so lakeshore houses often sit on older lots with a side drive or a garage at the back. Central Etobicoke took shape around Islington and The Kingsway, while the north, Rexdale and Thistletown, filled in after the Second World War with houses, apartment buildings and a large industrial park.
Those layers change the wiring plan. In a Long Branch detached house the service usually comes into the basement, yet the parking spot may be the full depth of the lot away, so the route matters more than the charger. A 1950s Rexdale house often parks on its own drive beside the building, which keeps the cable short, but the original service may have little spare room for a 240-volt circuit. The rating on your main breaker and the distance to your parking spot tell us which of these fits your house.
The Kingsway is its own case. Robert Home Smith wanted every house there built with a discreetly placed garage and local sandstone from the Humber and Credit valleys, so the charger can end up out of sight of the panel and the route may pass walls you would rather not patch. We plan a path that stays hidden and leaves original masonry alone wherever the code allows.
Toronto Hydro, overnight rates and Etobicoke panels
Etobicoke's hydro commission was one of six utilities folded into Toronto Hydro in 1998, so every street from Markland Wood to Thistletown is in Toronto Hydro territory. If your house has its own Toronto Hydro account, the Ultra-Low Overnight plan charges its lowest price from 11 at night until 7 the next morning, every day of the week. A Level 2 Charger Installation paired with a schedule in the charger's app lets the car do nearly all of its charging inside that window, and you choose the plan through Toronto Hydro's self-serve portal.
That same portal includes a peak demand tool, which Toronto Hydro offers so homeowners and their electricians can judge whether a charger calls for a service upgrade. We also run a full load calculation of our own. Markland Wood's houses were mostly finished by 1967 and Rexdale's first wave dates from the mid-1950s, long before anyone planned for a car circuit, so when the numbers fall short we quote an Electrical Panel Upgrade or a load-managed charger, whichever actually suits your house.
Humber Bay condos and Etobicoke shared parking
The Humber Bay waterfront is now lined with condominium towers, and a charger in a shared garage follows Ontario's condo process rather than a simple booking. The request is yours to make as the unit owner: a signed, written application to the corporation, with plans and equipment details attached. The board then has 60 days. Turning you down takes a qualified professional's report tying the charger to a breach of the Condo Act or other law, harm to the structure, or a health and safety risk.
Once the application clears, the owner and corporation have 90 days to sign a written agreement setting out who pays for what, and that agreement is registered on the unit's title. On the building side, our Commercial EV Charging team can measure how much spare capacity the garage's electrical room has and set out how each stall's use gets billed back, in a document the board can table at its next meeting, so one owner's request can become a plan for the whole garage.

My Kingsway garage sits well back from the house. Can the charger go out there?+
In most cases, yes. What sets the price is how the cable reaches the garage: from the basement and underground, or along an existing feed if the garage already has power. We look at the panel rating, the distance and what lies between them, then give you one fixed price that includes the ESA permit and inspection. If a walkway, garden bed or stone wall is in the way, you hear about it before you book.
I have a Long Branch or Mimico house with no garage. What are my options?+
If you park on a side drive or pad on your own lot, we can mount a weather-rated charger on the house wall or on a post beside the spot. An outdoor-rated NEMA 14-50 Outlet works too if your Level 2 unit is a plug-in model with a 14-50 plug. If your only parking is on the street, a home charger cannot fix that, and we would rather say that up front than sell you equipment you cannot use.
I rent a condo in Humber Bay. Can I get a charger at my spot?+
The application under Ontario's condo rules has to come from the unit owner, since the resulting agreement is registered on the unit's title. Ask your landlord to apply, and we can prepare the load figures and technical material the corporation will want to see. Once the agreement is registered, the timing depends mostly on how far your stall is from the electrical room, and we give you that in writing with the fixed price.
