Our basement unit has its own subpanel. Can the charger come off that?+
Rarely. A subpanel feeding a basement unit is usually sized for that unit's own kitchen, heat and laundry, and it draws from the same main service anyway, so borrowing it adds no capacity. We normally feed the charger from the main panel, where the load calculation covers the whole house, and leave the tenant's subpanel serving only the tenant's circuits. Either way, the work goes through the ESA permit and inspection.

It depends on whether the garage connects to the house. If it does, we usually run the cable through the connecting wall or ceiling to a new circuit. If the garage stands on its own, the circuit travels underground in conduit or along another code-approved route.
