Mutual driveways and rear garages in East York

Most of Old East York south of Cosburn was built before the Second World War on a traditional urban block pattern. Toronto homes from the 1920s to the 1940s were often built with a mutual driveway: one strip shared by two houses, leading to back yards and garages. Each owner typically holds half the strip plus a registered right of way over the other half, so the shared drive itself is no place for equipment or a cable.

The practical answer is usually the rear garage or your own side of the lot. Frederick Todd laid out Leaside as a planned town in 1912, and the bulk of its housing went up after the Leaside Viaduct improved access in 1927. Tenants there cannot book a charger install on their own, and Toronto Hydro's advice to people in multi-unit buildings is to work with the building manager or condo corporation on a solution before buying an EV.
