Is Guelph Hydro still my utility, and does that change anything for the install?+
Guelph Hydro became part of Alectra Utilities in 2019, so Alectra now looks after your meter, your bill and your choice of price plan. A charger circuit itself is governed by the ESA permit and inspection. Where Alectra does have a role, typically a service upgrade that means cutting and restoring power at the meter, we arrange it with them and check their requirements for your address before quoting. Switching to Ultra-Low Overnight pricing is a request you make to Alectra.
Our house in Clairfields is only a few years old. Is it ready for a charger?+
Newer does not automatically mean ready. A recent south-end build often has a larger service and an attached garage near the panel, which helps, but the real test is spare capacity and open breaker spaces once the house's appliances are counted. Tell us the main breaker rating and which appliances run on electricity, and we can check the numbers before anything is booked.
I am registering a new basement unit with the city. Does that paperwork cover a charger too?+
No, they are separate. The additional dwelling unit goes through the city's building permit and registration process, while the charger circuit is electrical work that needs its own ESA permit and inspection, which we file. If you are building the unit and adding a charger at the same time, tell us early so the load calculation counts the new suite and any panel work happens only once.
Do I need a heritage permit to add a charger in the Brooklyn and College Hill district?+
It depends on where the charger goes. The district requires a heritage permit to change, erect or demolish a building or structure, while minor changes can go ahead without one. A unit mounted inside the garage stays out of the streetscape. For a front or side wall, we get an answer from the City of Guelph on whether a heritage permit applies before drilling, and move the mounting spot if needed.
