Yes, with a unit rated for outdoor use and a careful mount. Under a carport it stays out of most rain and snow, and we set it high enough to clear drifts and run the supply in sealed conduit. A hardwired charger is the tidier choice outdoors, while a NEMA 14-50 outlet needs a weatherproof in-use cover that stays closed with the plug inserted.
Our house is on one of the streets climbing toward the escarpment. Does the slope change where the charger goes?+
It can. If your driveway drops toward a garage tucked under the house, the panel may be on that same lower level, which keeps the run short, but meltwater tends to pool at the garage door, so we mount the charger well up the side wall. On a driveway that climbs to the house, we place the unit where the charge port ends up once the car is parked, so the cable never has to stretch across the slope.
